Statement from Governor Togiola Tulafono on
death of His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II
Samoa Head of State
(UTULEI) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today issued the following statement on receiving news of the passing of His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II last night in Apia:
STATEMENT
“I join the people and government of American Samoa to express our sadness in hearing of the passing of His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II – Head of State of Samoa.
This is a great loss, not only to the Independent State of Samoa, but also to American Samoa. His Highness Malietoa was the might of all of Samoa. He was the icon of Samoan leadership, Samoan democracy, and Samoan compassion. He was the epitome of excellence in leadership and “tofa loloto.”
His Highness was regarded as the Father of Samoa. There are countless similar sentiments of thankfulness and praise about His Highness that are echoed by all throughout the Pacific. His faith and love for his people helped light the flame of independence for Samoa, and maintained a peaceful transition for Samoa from her difficult beginnings into one of the best modern democracies.
Malietoa’s presence will be missed quite profoundly and he will live in the hearts of all of Samoa and the Pacific. Mary and I, together with the people of American Samoa sorely missed his most reverent paternal presence in our Flag Day celebration this year. And we will miss, even more, his good company during the important special events of both of our governments.
On behalf of the people and the Territory of American Samoa, I extend to the Honorable Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, Prime Minister of Samoa, and the people of Samoa, our deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences for this enormous loss for all of Samoa.
May His Highness rest in peace in God’s merciful keeping.”
