Gov. Togiola announces $1.3 million for Community Services Block Grant stimulus
(UTULEI) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today announced a fiscal year 2009 grant award of $1.3 million for Community Services Block Grant stimulus from the Administration for Children and Families of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Governor Togiola was informed of the grant award in a letter dated April 10, 2009 from Mr. Joseph Lonergan, Director of the Division of Mandatory Grants of the Department Health and Human Services.
“This new funding through the Recovery Act makes assistance available to our community groups who in turn help out to strengthen our economy,” said Governor Togiola. “We need help during these tough times and the new resource through ARRA lends a big hand to our community groups in the Territory.”
Under the Recovery Act, funds must be used to reduce poverty, revitalize low-income communities, and assist low-income families become self-sufficient. Eligible entities use funds to provide services and activities addressing employment, education, housing, nutrition, and emergency services to combat the central causes of poverty.
The actual allotment for American Samoa CSBG is $1,299,836.
“We are very thankful for these huge funds because they support a variety of efforts in our island community based on the stimulus allowable activities,” said Governor Togiola. “These are new resources for CSBG and we are looking at ways to support programs for our community and see how we can expand the funds in the true purpose of the Recovery Act funding.”
