DOH administers free flu shots and basic
check-ups for the elderly
Over 100 elderly folks were able to receive, free of charge, basic medical check-ups and flu shots at the Territorial Administration on Aging (TAOA) compound in Pago Pago yesterday, thanks to the unselfish service of the Department of Health.
“Flu season is here and those most prone to catching the disease are young children and the elderly,” said DOH medical director Dr. Ivan Tuliau. “The best way to protect yourself from getting the flu is by getting the flu shot.”
DOH had offered free flu shots earlier this year in August but because of the increasing number of flu cases over the past several weeks, the service was offered again this month.
According to Tuliau, it is his hope that the free flu shots will be a service offered every four months so local residents, especially the elderly and young children, will be protected from getting the disease.
In addition to flu shots, DOH personnel administered free checks for blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and weight. Most of the elderly who took advantage of the free services expressed their gratitude and appreciation, saying that this is a wonderful service not only because it is free, but because it enables them to get checked at their place of work, instead of having to go to the LBJ Medical Center where the waiting period can take anywhere up to three hours.
Tuliau said that DOH plans to make another TAOA visit some time early next year.
