Gov. Togiola and NGA committee meet with Transportation Secretary Lahood

(WASHINGTON DC: Sunday, February 21, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono (D) today, as a member of the National Governors Association Economic Development and Commerce Committee, joined California Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger (R), committee chairman, Delaware Governor Jack Markell (D), vice chairman, and other governors who are members of the committee for discussion with Secretary of Transportation Ray Lahood on a national surface transportation policy.
 
Entitled - “The Future of Surface Transportation" - the discussion allowed the governors the opportunity to offer their views and to encourage Secretary Lahood to lead the way, through President Obama and onto Congress, for the development of a more effective and more sustainable transportation system for the United States through the National Surface Transportation Policy.

First Lady Michelle Obama appeal to governors at NGA winter meeting for support on childhood obesity initiative

(WASHINGTON DC: Saturday, February 20, 2010) - Governor Togiola Tulafono and the nation's governors today convened the winter meeting of the National Governors Association (NGA) in Washington DC.
 
As the governors of states and territories address critical issues at the NGA that include health care reform, America’s First Lady Michelle Obama was invited to open the conference where she discussed childhood obesity and her initiative called “Let’s Move.”
 
In her opening remarks, First Lady Michelle Obama appealed to the nation's governors to join in her initiative to reduce childhood obesity and praised many of the governors for the work already underway in the states.
 
"There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this problem,” said Mrs. Obama. “While the nation needs a comprehensive approach to fighting childhood obesity, that doesn't necessarily mean an expensive approach.”

Governor Togiola in Washington DC for annual National Governors Association winter meeting

(UTULEI: Monday, February 15, 2010) - Governor Togiola Tulafono departed the Territory on Sunday night to attend meetings in the mainland, which begin in Washington DC at the end of the week.
 
In the nation’s capital, Governor Togiola will join the governors of states and territories at the annual National Governor’s Association winter meeting, which begins this Saturday, February 20th. First Lady Michelle Obama will be the opening speaker at the NGA conference. She will speak on her new initiative on childhood obesity and the need to make improvements in child care settings, schools, and communities to support obesity prevention among the nation and territories’ children.

Gov. Togiola: “We thank God for sparing American Samoa of more devastation”

(UTULEI: Saturday, February 13, 2010) - The Cyclone Warning for the Territory of American Samoa was cancelled today at 6am by the National Weather Service in Tafuna, who then issued a Gale Warning, which was cancelled at 6pm.

Governor Togiola Tulafono issued the following statement after Tropical Cyclone Rene moved away from American Samoa:

We give thanks to God for his grace, mercy and loving kindness in allowing Cyclone Rene to spare American Samoa of more devastation than we can handle at this time.

Gov. Togiola prepares American Samoa for Cyclone Rene

(UTULEI: Friday, February 12, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today met with members of his Cabinet and emergency first responders as American Samoa braces for Cyclone Rene, which is scheduled to arrive on Tutuila at 9 o’clock tonight.
 
In a briefing at the Territorial Emergency Management Coordination Office in Tafuna, Governor Togiola said the Territory’s emergency agencies are prepared and he expressed his gratitude for the preparation for Cyclone Rene.
 
Governor Togiola issued the following statement as the Territory prepares for the arrival of the storm.

American Samoa Government wins on appeal, Progressive’s $6.6 million judgment against ASG reversed

(UTULEI: Tuesday, January 26, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today expressed his delight on the Appellate Court’s unanimous decision to reverse the $6.6 million judgment by Progressive Insurance Limited against the American Samoa Government (ASG).

 “I wish to thank the Appellate Division of the High Court of American Samoa for rendering its decision in favor of ASG. We are pleased the Court has agreed with our position,” said Governor Togiola. “This was a very important court case for ASG and we are relieved that our taxpayers will no longer be burdened with the payment of $6.6 million to an insurance company.”

Gov. Togiola returns from Thailand COS meeting - “working together toward a mutually beneficial solution”

(UTULEI: Monday, January 25, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono returned on Sunday night to the Territory from meetings in Thailand and Honolulu. 

In Bangkok on January 18, 2010, Governor Togiola met with Chicken of the Sea Incorporated (COS) board member Mr. Thirapong Chansiri to discuss the future of the COS Samoa Packing facilities in American Samoa.

Gov. Togiola: "American Samoa Legislature has lost its patriarch"

(UTULEI: Friday, January 22, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono, in Honolulu for government meetings, issued the following the statement in hearing the news of the passing of Senator Tuana’itau Fa’atamala Tuia today at the age of 89.

 Statement from Governor Togiola:
 
“It is with deep regret and sadness to learn this morning of Senator Tuana’itau Tuia’s passing today. As American Samoa’s elder statesman and longest serving member of the Fono, we have gained so much as a people, and we have so much to be thankful for as a Territory through the contribution of Senator Tuana’itau as a public servant.

Gov. Togiola congratulates Mayor Elizabeth Malae Faumuina Langkilde Kautz as president of U.S. Conference of Mayors

 

(UTULEI: Friday, January 15, 2010) - Governor Togiola Tulafono today extended congratulations to Mayor Elizabeth Malae Tuiasosopo Faumuina Langkilde Kautz of Burnsville, Minnesota on becoming President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Governor Togiola said Mayor Kautz, the fifth woman and first minority woman to be President in the history of The U.S. Conference of Mayors, is another wonderful example of a successful Samoan who left their island home so that they can help their family financially and pursue collegiate studies.

Gov. Togiola looks forward to “American Samoa: Football Island” on 60 Minutes

(UTULEI) - Governor Togiola Tulafono today reminded the people of the Territory of the upcoming segment of 60 Minutes on CBS entitled “American Samoa: Football Island” to be aired across the U.S. this Sunday, January 17th. Unfortunately for viewers on island, it will be aired a week later.
