(UTULEI) – Lieutenant Governor Ipulasi Aitofele Sunia has proclaimed March as National Nutrition Month.

In a church service today at CCCAS Faga’alu to commemorate National Nutrition Month, Lieutenant Governor Ipulasi said food plays a central role in the Samoan culture.

“Our cultural and religious practices involve food. A gathering is not complete without food because we also show our love through food,” said Lieutenant Governor Ipulasi. “The best food is saved for the cultural and religious leaders and it is expected that the reward that we receive is from the blessings and the gratitude of those that receive the food that has been prepared and served.”

Lieutenant Governor Ipulasi said these are all fundamental practices that Samoans hold dear in the culture and it is a practice that should be encouraged, but, with changes.

“When it comes to food, let the foundation of our culture remain, but modify its practices,” said Lieutenant Governor Ipulasi. “The choice to eat healthy is ours to make. And we continue to struggle to make the choices of eating healthy. We have to be cautious of the food we buy. Nutritional eating begins at the store with the choices we make. And that choice is to eat healthy and eat smart.”

In attendance at the church service, included Mrs. Elisapeta Sunia, Director of Health Uto’ofili Asofa’afetai Maga, LBJ CEO Patricia Tindall, legislators and cabinet members. CCCAS Faga’alu Rev. Lalomauga Pa’au conducted the 90 minute service.
