Governor Togiola announces new $2.7m federal grants from
Homeland Security, FEMA and DOT

 
(UTULEI) - Governor Togiola Tulafono announced today new federal grants for American Samoa through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“I am happy to say that U.S. Homeland Security, FEMA and DOT have approved our application for funding through grant programs for our American Samoa Territorial Office of Homeland Security,” said Governor Togiola. “We are very thankful for the $2.6 million from Homeland Security and FEMA and $111,000 from the Department of Transportation, as it will assist greatly in our Public Safety communications preparedness and enhance our planning and training capability across emergency response. I wish to thank Acting Director of the American Samoa Territorial Office of Homeland Security - Tuala Mike Sala and his staff on the great job in preparing our application.”

The federal grants awarded to the Territory are:

  • DHS/FEMA, FY 2008 Public Safety Interoperable Communications Grant (PSIC), $691.948
  • DHS/FEMA, FY 2008 Interopeable Emergency Communication Grant Program (IECGP), $54,033
  • DHS/FEMA 2008 State Homeland Security Grant Program (SHSGP), $1,888,092
  • DHS/FEMA 2008 Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP), $111,567

The PSIC Grant Program will assist public safety agencies in the planning and coordination associated with the training of the use of interoperable communication equipment, software and systems that utilize reallocated public safety spectrum for radio communications.
