Governor Togiola breaks ground on Tafuna Procurement Road Project

(UTULEI) - Governor Togiola Tulafono broke ground today for the Tafuna Procurement Road Project in a brief ceremony at Petesa Tai this morning.

The project, the reconstruction of the 2100 foot long stretch of road from McDonald’s and the Procurement Office in Tafuna to the area where Friendly Car Rental is located, has been awarded to McConnell Dowell, who had the winning bid of $2.1 million.

Governor Togiola expressed his delight on the project and the much-needed improvement of the “special road.”

“I wish to commend the Department of Public Works for making this project come to life. I wish to tell all those who reside in this area, as well as the travelling public, that this road project is very special and can be referred to it as ‘the Golden Road’ because it will cost over $2 million to build,” said Governor Togiola. “This part of Tafuna –the Petesa area—is a growing area with lots of vehicles and the road has taken a beating. So, I am very happy that we will now have this new road in our hopes to connect all other roads within this neighborhood to ensure a better and steady flow of traffic in this growing community.”

Governor Togiola offered congratulations to McConnell Dowell for winning the construction contract and thanked the company for their great contribution in being part of creating American Samoa’s infrastructure. He also thanked the US Department of Transportation for the financial support in territorial projects.

The Tafuna Procurement Road Project is estimated to be completed in 7 months. The actual cost of the road reconstruction is $2,116,830.
