Gov. Togiola meets again with Dongwon Chairman Kim and says tofa soifua
(UTULEI) – Governor Togiola Tulafono met again yesterday with Dongwon Industries Chairman Jae Chul Kim before departing the Territory.
In a meeting at the Office of the Governor, Governor Togiola again expressed his sincere gratitude to Mr. Kim --who worked as a fisherman in the Territory many years ago before starting up Dongwon Industries-- for his visit to American Samoa.
“I am very honored and elated that you have visited us this week. Welcome home. I am very grateful to you and Dongwon Industries for bringing your business to the Territory. As you know, StarKist is a focal point for our economic development, so we’re very happy StarKist is remaining in American Samoa,” said Governor Togiola. “As we have discussed in our initial meeting, we offer you our full support and our willingness to continue our relationship to ensure sustainability of your business. We hope that you see American Samoa as an opportunity to create additional businesses. Regardless of what you’ve heard, know that we want Dongwon Industries to be profitable.”
Governor Togiola and Chairman Kim also discussed the difficult financial situation in the world and in the US, and the importance of StarKist continuing its operation in Pago Pago.
“I know things aren’t easy at this time across the globe, and it gives me even more appreciation for your decision to keep StarKist in the Territory. StarKist has an excellent history here. And there are many issues we’re concerned with and your visit signals your willingness to work with us,” said Governor Togiola. “I will endeavor with support of our government leaders to make your business profitable. My request is that you always consider raising the level and quality of employment for our workers so they can build their lives. I also ask for fairness in doing business in American Samoa. Our people are very loyal when they enjoy what they do. It has been a great honor and pleasure to have met you. Thank you, sir, for coming.”
Chairman Kim told Governor Togiola that because he fished in American Samoa waters, coming back to the Territory has brought back fond memories.
“There are so many changes on your beautiful island from when I was here to fish. And that is a good sign, a sign of progress and growth. So, I have a special feeling for American Samoa. I wish to thank Governor Togiola for meeting with me and being a part of my visit. During our visit I have met the workers and fish boat owners this week on island. And we’re on the same boat. There are a lot of changes to be done to improve StarKist,” said Chairman Kim. “We have many areas to improve and they can be improved with support of the Governor and the American Samoa Government. Together we can make these improvements. We will continue to look and evaluate business potential for the betterment of all parties involved. It has been a wonderful week and I thank you, Governor, and all the people for making my trip back to American Samoa a very successful one. Thank you very much.”
