Swains Island delegate to be selected Friday
An open meeting has been scheduled for 2:30p.m. on Friday, October 24 at the Fono Guest Fale, where residents of the Swains Island will be present to select a delegate who will represent them in the local House of Representatives.
(Local law allows the Swains Island delegate to sit and vote in committee but not on the floor, which is a situation similar to that of American Samoa’s Delegate to Congress.)
Rep. Alexander Jennings is the current Swains Island faipule who was elected in 2004 to replace his cousin Wallace Thompson who did not seek re-election at the time.
An official from the Election Office will be in attendance during the open meeting for observation only, as Swains Islanders carry out the entire process themselves. The Election Office official will deliver the final results to the Chief Election Officer.
The process does not include any official ballots. Instead, voting is carried out through the verbal submission of a person’s name, followed by the vote count which is either conducted through a show of hands or by standing up.
