Tafuna Procurement Road Project breaks ground

The Tafuna Procurement Road Project broke ground today during a brief ceremony held at Petesa Tai and attended by government officials, cabinet members, and special guest speaker Governor Togiola Tulafono.

The project calls for the reconstruction of the 2,100-foot-long stretch of road from McDonald’s and the Procurement Office in Tafuna and heading inland to the area where Friendly Car Rental is located.

The contract has been awarded to McConnell Dowell, who had a winning bid of $2.1 million.

Governor Togiola expressed his delight with the project and the much-needed improvement of what he called “the special road.” The Governor wishes to relay to the residents of the area, as well as the traveling public, that the road project is “very special,” and can be referred to as ‘the Golden Road’ because it costs over $2 million to construct.

“This part of Tafuna –the Petesa area—is a growing area with lots of vehicles and the road has taken a beating,” the Governor said, adding that he is “very happy that we will now have this new road in our hopes to connect all other roads within this neighborhood to ensure a better and steady flow of traffic in this growing community.”

Togiola commended the Department of Public Works for making the project reality. He also congratulated McConnell Dowell for winning the construction contract and thanked the company for their great contribution in being part of creating American Samoa’s infrastructure.

Togiola also extended his gratitude to the US Department of Transportation for their financial support of territorial projects.

The Tafuna Procurement Road Project is estimated to be completed in 7 months and the exact dollar amount for the work totals $2,116,830.
