Ground breaking ceremony held for Aua village road project
Governor Togiola Tulafono was joined by village leaders, PC Mauga Tasi Asuega, and Ma’oputasi faipule Rep. Paopaoailua Joe Fiaui today during the ground breaking ceremony for the Aua Village Road II Project.
The project - estimated to cost $213,577 - will include the construction of a 750-foot single lane road that will provide easy access to the mountain side of the village, an area where the road is currently nothing but gravel.
Upon completion of the project, the new inland road will be concrete and include a sidewalk and a shoulder refuge for oncoming vehicles. Drainage work will include the construction of a concrete swale and u-drain to convey road run-off to be discharged in the nearest stream.
Governor Togiola said the Aua road project will be a big relief for villagers who currently work on their plantations, as well as those who wish to construct homes on the mountainside.
“I wish to commend the Department of Public Works for the many years of preparation leading up to today,” said the Governor. “It took some time and many years to contact families and landowners to all agree to allow for the paving of this road. And by early next year, Aua will have this mountainside road to access undeveloped land, existing homes, and build future homes.”
Togiola said the government continues to anticipate village population growth and, therefore, must build new roads to accommodate that expansion.
RM Construction has been awarded the contract for the project which totals $213, 577 and fully funded by the US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration.
The Department of Public Works estimates the road to be completed in 6 months.
