Territory participates in the Pacific Wave 08 Exercise
American Samoa is taking part in the Pacific Wave 08 Exercise, which is a Pacific wide tsunami exercise sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Culture Organization (UNESCO) and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
TEMCO and the local weather station issued a joint statement saying the exercise will not directly involve the public but instead, will focus on lines of communication and the ability to alert agencies and local officials in a timely manner. In addition, NOAA weather radios will be tested, and the media will be involved.
“This exercise is a valuable opportunity that will allow each agency to validate their emergency team and procedures,” the statement said.
The exercise is set to take place on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 8 a.m. and once NOAA issues the first warning, each agency will be contacted.
