CRAG and Feleti Barstow Public Library working together to offer

DVD outreach program

The Governor’s Coral Reef Advisory Group (CRAG), in collaboration with the Feleti Barstow Public Library, have been working together to create a collection of educational and environmental DVDs which are available to the public, especially to local students.

“So if you are interested about the world beyond our island or underneath our ocean waves, this is the perfect way to travel and see it firsthand for free,” says a public notice from the Department of Commerce. “Now is the time to take up the opportunity and join in the fun and learning experience with films offered right here in American Samoa.”

The Feleti Barstow Public Library will showcase the films every Friday, and will be made available to check out for those with library cards, which are free of charge and can be obtained from the Library’s front desk during normal business hours.

The following is the schedule for the DVD outreach for November:

Pole to Pole: From the Planet Earth series – November 7, 2008 (3-4pm)
Pole to Pole is one episode in the epic Planet Earth series, showing the ultimate portrait of our Earth. Over 2000 days in the field, and 40 cameramen across 200 locations were needed to create the series. Pole to Pole gives a one-hour snapshot of our planet, along with the highlights of the other film offerings in this 14-hour series. PLANET EARTH’s premier episode, “Pole to Pole,” ties the series together with a fresh understanding of how life in every nook and cranny of the globe is connected – from the highest mountains and darkest caves, shallowest water and deepest oceans, ice-covered lands and great plains, untamed jungles and giants forests, to freshwater and the harshest deserts.

Coral Seas: From the Blue Planet series – November 14, 2008 (3-4pm)
Coral Seas is one episode in the Blue Planet series, offering a breathtaking view of the world’s oceans. The series is the winner of two Emmy Awards, including best cinematography. The CORAL SEAS series shows life under water at certain depth, time, and feeding behaviors of different organisms.

            National Geographic: Human Footprint – November 21, 2008 (3-4:30pm)
Ever wondered about your personal impact on the planet? National Geographic’s Human Footprint explores the impacts the average American has in the course of a lifetime. From our cars to our disposable toothbrushes, this film documents the astounding impact we make on planet Earth.

All questions, comments, and concerns regarding the films can be forwarded to Derek Toloumu or Alyssa Edwards at 633-5155.
