Territory received over $10 million from “Reading First” grant

American Samoa received, in the past six years, more than $10 million under the “Reading First” grant allocation from the US Department of Education.

This is according to statistics released from the USDOE covering all US states and territories from 2002-2008.

Altogether, American Samoa received $10.7 million within that time period. The highest grant amount was for $1.63 million each in 2006 and 2007. The territory received $623,668 for 2008.

The following is a breakdown of the grant amounts for the first four years:
2002 - $1.42 million
2003 - $1.57 million
2004 - $1.62 million
2005 - $1.65 million

The Reading First grant program focuses on putting proven methods of early reading instruction in classrooms. Through the program, states and districts receive support to apply scientifically based reading research – and the proven instructional and assessment tools consistent with this research – to ensure that all children learn to read well by the end of third grade.
