Governor proclaims November as Runaway and

Homeless Youth Prevention Month

Governor Togiola Tulafono says that the problem of runaway affects many of American Samoa’s youth, and community action is needed to help break the cycle of runaway and improve relationships.

That is why he is proclaiming the month of November 2008 as the first annual “Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month” in American Samoa, and he is calling upon all citizens to join protection organizations, groups, and individuals in observance of this month, with appropriate programs and activities.

According to Togiola, runaway is “a complex and growing problem in our Territory and Nation,” and 2007 data indicates that 10% of the youth between 10 and 18 years old runaway from their homes.

“Dedicated agencies of the American Samoa Government have worked diligently to provide protection and service to youth in an effort to prevent further runaway behavior,” Togiola wrote. “Parents and families, together with the Runaway and Homeless Youth Program and other individuals and local community groups are dedicated to the goal of combating the preventing of runaways among our youth.”

The Governor said the welfare and development of every youth is the responsibility of every youth with whom he or she comes in contact.
