Governor offers answers for non-US citizens wishing to
apply for military service
Governor Togiola Tulafono, during his weekend radio program, provided an answer to questions surrounding the eligibility of non-US citizens wishing to apply for service in the military.
According to Togiola, there was once a belief that only US citizens or nationals can enter into military service. However, after research and correspondence with military officials, Togiola said a person born in a foreign country like Samoa, can enter into the military.
However, only those who hold a green card and reside in the US are eligible to apply.
The Governor explained that permanent resident status for American Samoa does not count under this federal regulation, meaning that a citizen of Samoa residing in American Samoa under permanent resident status does not qualify for enlistment into the military.
