Territory celebrates National Teacher Appreciation Week

Local educators across the territory are being honored this week during National Teacher Appreciation Week, as proclaimed by Governor Togiola Tulafono.

Throughout the week, teachers will be honored with well wishes, candy and flower leis, gift baskets, flower bouquets, and expressions of gratitude from the many students whose lives they touch everyday.

This year’s event is from May 4-10 with the theme: “To Lead is to Serve.”

In his proclamation, the Governor said that a strong, effective system of public education for all children and youth is essential to our democratic system of government, and considerable progress in the social, technological, and scientific fields have been made due to our system of free and public education.

According to the Governor, much of the progress can be attributed to the qualified and dedicated teachers entrusted with the educational development of our children, as teachers work to open students’ minds to ideas, knowledge, and dreams.

Togiola said teachers fill many roles as listeners, explorers, role models, motivators, and mentors, and it is appropriate that teachers be recognized for their dedication and commitment to educating our children.

“Teachers continue to influence us long after our school days are only memories,” Togiola said. “I urge all the residents of American Samoa to join in the vital task of paying tribute to our school teachers, and acknowledging the impact of teachers on our lives.”
