Appointees confirmed for Board of Registration
of Professional Surveyors

Members of the Senate have approved by unanimous vote the Administration’s appointments to the Board of Registration of Professional Surveyors. The appointees were named in a March 6, 2008 general memorandum from Lt. Governor Ipulasi Aitofele Sunia.

The new members are Faleosina Faiai Voigt, Fa’ipaua Mareko, Taulapapa William Sword, and Meko Aiumu.

Local statute states that four members of the board are to be appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate to serve for a term of three years. Additionally, Public Works director Taeaotui Punaofo Tilei is the fifth member who serves as the board chairman.

Among other duties, the board qualifies all persons who practice the profession of land surveying; receives applications for certificates of registration, and issues such certificates to those who meet the qualifications.

Members of the board should be familiar with land surveying either by profession, related occupations, or a demonstrated interest in land surveying.

No member of the board who is an employee of the American Samoa Government may offer to perform land surveying services for pay except as may be specifically approved by the board in each instance.

The new board members are as follows:

Faleosina Faiai Voigt is the deputy director of the Department of Public Works who holds an Associate or Arts degree from the American Samoa Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree from Idaho State University. She oversees the Civil Highway Division at Public Works and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Hawaii.

Fa’ipaua Mareko is the current manager of the ASPA wastewater operation plant and is an ASCC graduate. He received his Associate of Science in Design Technology (Architectural and Civil) from Utah Technical College.

Taulapapa Willie Sword is a licensed professional land surveyor with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Science in Construction Engineering Management from Oregon State University. He is the terminal manager/engineer for British Petroleum and once served as the director of Public Works.

Meko Aiumu is currently the manager for the Lands and Survey Division of Public Works. He attended Honolulu Community College in 1969 and where he also underwent training for survey management.
