Governor Togiola supports idea of villages building their own schools

During his weekend radio program this morning, Governor Togiola Tulafono expressed his support of having each village build and maintain their own schools.

Togiola was responding to comments about the lack of school buses and how potentially dangerous riding the school bus can be for the younger students.

According to Togiola, the Department of Education recently took possession of three brand new school buses but there is still a need for more. He supported the opinion of a female caller who suggested that each village erect their own schools, while the government provides the manpower to run it.

This means that the village would build the school, maintain and beautify the campus and surrounding area, and the government would provide the teachers, faculty, staff, and school principal(s) to oversee the school’s operations.

Togiola said that having schools in each village means that school buses would no longer be necessary. He added that if each village has the ability to construct and maintain churches and places of worship, then building and maintaining schools should be no problem.

According to Togiola, building schools in each village would lead to increased collaboration between the different villages and the government, and would encourage involvement from community members and leaders.

The Governor concluded by saying that while he supports the idea, there is a lot of time and consideration that needs to go into it, and he will look closely into the matter.
