Territory to get over $400K for employment programs

03/09/2009 - More than $400,000 of the US Labor Department’s share of the federal stimulus recovery package will be given to American Samoa.

According to the DOL’s distribution list, the territory will get $462,530 for training and employment programs, and the funding is expected to be administered by the local Department of Human Resources. Of that amount, about $170,000 is allocated for youth activities program.

The money comes from the stimulus package which provides $3.5 billion to the DOL for the workforce investment system aimed at helping Americans get back to work through the national network of One-Stop Career Centers.

Administered by the DOL’s Employment and Training Administration, the money will support more youth employment opportunities for summer 2009.

Meanwhile, Governor Togiola Tulafono has appointed a special committee, the Stimulus Office Team, whose members will be responsible for reviewing, monitoring, and implementing all the funds American Samoa will receive under the stimulus bill.

The team will be headed by ASG federal grants manager Pat Galea’i, while Lt. Governor Faoa Aitofele Sunia will have overall responsibility of overseeing the team.
