DOCUMENTS FOR TRAVEL TO AMERICAN SAMOA
- All travelers entering American Samoa must have a valid travel document and a return-trip ticket or onward passage. For most travelers, the valid travel document is an official passport with photo issued by the country of citizenship, which must be valid for at least six (6) months at the time of entry.
- For citizens and nationals of the United States, in the past, travel documents showing proof of U.S. citizenship consisted of a certified birth certificate and an official photo identification card. After September 11, 2001, the passport is now the recommended travel document. There are exceptions, which include U.S. military personnel, American Samoa U.S. citizen and national residents, flight and ship crews.
- U.S. citizens and nationals do not require visas or permits to enter American Samoa. There is no limit on the number of days they may stay.
- Non-U.S. citizens/nationals must apply for a permit to enter American Samoa before travel. American Samoa Immigration, upon approval of the application, will issue a permit authorizing the traveler to visit for a 30-day period. There is a forty dollar ($40.00) fee for the permit upon approval. The traveler must depart on or before 30 days after entry.
- The permit, however, may be extended for 30 days upon application. A fifty dollar ($50.00) fee is charged if the permit extension is approved. No further extension of the permit is allowed. The traveler must depart American Samoa on or before the expiration of the 30-day extension.
- American Samoa Immigration has allowed nationals from a limited number of countries that participate in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) of the U.S. Department of State to enter without a permit for a 30-day visit. While there are currently 35 participating countries in the VWP, American Samoa on a case-by-case basis has granted entry without a permit to nationals of the countries of Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and a few other participating countries. This limited application of the VWP will continue on a case-by-case basis until such time that American Samoa Immigration acquires the capability to verify, among other things, that a participating country and its traveling national meet the requirements of the VWP.
